    The possibility of a fire in dust layers causing an explosion or a fire as a consequence of an explosion is something that needs to be looked into as part of safety assessment applying explosion protection measures. The so-called burning class of a dust gives a very good indication of dust layer combustion behaviour. The burning class can be determined by a very simple screening test. The standard is specifying the methodology for the determination and classification of dust layer combustion behaviour. The standard specifies whether and to which extent a fire started in a dust layer using a external ignition source can propagate. On the basis of the result of the test the combustion behaviour is classified.

    Safety assessments need to look at the possibility of a fire in dust layers which could then propagate or initiate an explosion. The so-called burning class of a dust gives an indication of dust layer combustion behaviour. The burning class can be determined by a simple screening test. It is aimed to develop a European standard describing the methodology for the determination and classification of dust layer combustion behaviour. The standard should describe whether a fire started in a dust layer using an external ignition source can propagate, and if so to what extent . Based on the test result the combustion behaviour is classified according to the following: Type of Reaction Class No ignition 1 Brief ignition, rapid extinction 2 Localised combustion, negligible spreading 3 Smouldering or slow combustion without flame 4 Slow, quiet burning with flames 5 Very rapid combustion with flame propagation or rapid decomposition without flame 6 The standard will cover: - Details of the test set-up; - Description of test performance; - Classification procedure; - Effect of process conditions (e.g. process temperature).

    Screw Conveyors and product receivers as explosion isolation systems

    This Technical Report describes how screw conveyors and product receivers can be used as an explosion isolation system for dust explosions using the product handled by this equipment as a means for explosion isolation. The report specifies test methods for evaluating the efficacy of these isolation techniques depending on both the mechanical layout of the equipment itself and the properties of the product handled. It covers e.g.: a) an overview of information available from research performed and experience obtained in industry b) important factors affecting the efficiency of such techniques of explosion isolation c) proposed ways of testing for evaluating the efficacy of these isolation techniques d) installation instructions including monitoring equipment e) maintenance instructions. The report only covers the use of screw conveyors and product receivers as a means of explosion isolation system for avoiding explosion propagation between interconnected enclosures in which an explosion may result as a consequence of ignition of explosive dust-air mixtures. This standard is not applicable for explosions of materials listed below, or for mixtures containing some of those materials: a) unstable materials that are liable to dissociate; b) explosive materials; c) pyrotechnic materials. This method is not suitable for use with recognised explosives, like gunpowder and dynamite, substances which do not require oxygen for combustion, pyrophoric substances, or substances or mixtures of substances which may under some circumstances behave in a similar manner.

    This standard specifies requirements for explosion pressure resistant and explosion pressure shock-resistant equipment. This standard is applicable to process vessels and systems. It is not applicable to individual items of equipment such as motors and gearboxes that may be designed to withstand an internal explosion, which are subject of EN 13463-3. This standard is valid for atmospheres having pressures ranging from 800 hPa to 1100 hPa and temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +60 °C. This standard applies to equipment and combinations of equipment where deflagrations may occur and is not applicable to equipment and combination of equipment where detonation may occur. It is essential that this standard be used for equipment made of metallic materials only.

    This EN specifies the requirements for venting devices used to protect enclosures against the major effect of internal explosions arising from the rapid burning of suspended dust, vapour or gas contained within. It includes the requirements for the design, inspection, testing, marking, documentation and packaging. The standard specifies explosion venting devices which are put on the market as autonomous protective systems. The application and specification of explosion venting devices is outlined for dust explosion protection in EN 14491 and for gas explosion protection in prEN 14994. The standard does not cover details for the avoidance of ignition sources from detection devices or other parts of the venting devices.

    This European Standard specifies the basic design requirements for the selection of a gas explosion venting protective system. This European Standard, EN 14797 and EN 14460 form a series of three standards which are used together. This European Standard is applicable to: – vent sizing to protect against the internal pressure effects of a gas explosion; - flame and pressure effects outside the enclosure; - recoil forces; - influence of vent ducts; - influence of initial temperature and pressure. This European Standard does not provide design and application rules against effects generated by detonation reactions or runaway exothermic reactions including decomposition in the gas phase. This European Standard is not applicable to: - fire risks arising either from materials processed, used or released by the equipment or from materials that make up equipment and buildings; - design, construction and testing of explosion venting devices, which are used to achieve explosion venting ); - protection against overpressures caused by events such as overfilling, overpressurisation, fire engulfment, overheating etc.
